Bicentenary of the Siege of Brimstone Hill
The victorious French general and the British admiral who out-manoeuvered the attacking French fleet are
depicted on the "Bicentenary of the Seige of Brimstone Hill" commemorative issue of March 15, 1982.
Thought to be impregnable, the Brimstone Fort fell to the French on February 12, 1782 after a one month siege and three weeks of concentrated bombardment. The island of St. Kitts was surrendered to the French but returned the following year under the terms of the Treaty of Paris.
