Shrub Oak Local Dog Post Label

Shrub Oak Local Dog Post Label
Strip of Three of the Shrub Oak Local Dog Post Label"

Herman Herst, Jr. (1909-1999) was a stamp dealer and philatelic journalist who on the basis of an 1862 statute, issued his own stamps for a local mail service in Shrub Oak, New York, his home at that time. They featured Alphie (1963-1976), his German shepherd, who delivered mail to Herst's and his neighbours' homes after the author picked it up at the post office (across the street from his house). The story of Alphie, who was pictured on Herst's stamps, was publicized around the world.
