Railway Newspaper Stamps
Latvia's "Winged Wheel and National Crest" railway newspaper stamps

The words "Latvijas Dzelzceli" in the scrolls at the top of the stamps pictured above mean "Latvian Railway." The phrase "laikrakstu parvadajumu samaksai" at the bottom translates as "newspapers transport payment." In his article entitled, "Special stamps served special classes of mail," Rick Miller explains, "Railway newspaper stamps were issued by Latvia during 1926-38. Issued to pay railway freight and some postal charges for parcels of newspapers, these stamps bridge the gaps between newspaper, parcel post and railway stamps." Although not listed in Scott, the stamps are included in many European catalogues.
