President Roosevelt Mourning Issue
with Perforation Error
This set of stamps commemorating the death of U.S. President
Franklin Delano Roosevelt was issued on December 1, 1945.
This stamp has been misperforated.
The practice of issuing stamps with black borders to mourn the
death of national leaders was quite common. Less than two years
after these stamps were issued another set memorialized George II.
Greece memorialized its own King, George
II, with this April 15, 1947 issue.
Other examples of mourning issues include Yugoslavia's King Alexander issues and
Germany's Hindenberg issue of 1934 and Belgium's Queen Astrid memorial issue of 1935.
