French India consisted of four settlements (Karikal, Pondichery, Yanaon and Chandemagor) in eastern India bordering on or close to the Bay of Bengal. A fifth settlement, Mahe, was on the west coast. Surrounded by British India, these settlements aligned themselves with the Free French during World War II although the Vichy Government did produce stamps that were never sold in the colony. Between 1947 and 1954 the French territories were transferred to India but the transfer was not officially ratified by the French parliament until 1962.
