French Post Offices in China

Gutter Pair of Surcharged Definitives

Gutter Pair of Surcharged Definitives
Gutter pair of 1911-1922 surcharge on definitives of 1902-1903.

Chinese Numbers
Chinese Characters for Numbers. Note that on the stamps, the character for the currency precedes the character for the denomination.

An allegory of "the rights of man" is featured in the design of these definitives for French Post Offices in China. These two stamps are separated by a gutter with the number 1. L.N. Williams defines gutters as spaces between unsevered stamps, panes or sheets (142).
