Cancellation honouring Czeslaw Slania

N.F.S. Grundtvig was engraved by Czeslaw Slania.

Born in Czeladz, Poland on October 22, 1921, Czeslaw Slania was a Polish engraver who was credited by the Guiness Book of World Records with being responsible fo rmore stamps than any other engraver (over 1000). During the Germanoccupation of Poland he forged documents for the resistance. After the war he enrolled in the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts and while he was still a student he began working at the Polish Stamp Printing Works. In 1951 he engraved the first of 23 stamps that he completed for the Polish Post Office before he defected to Sweden in 1956.Three years later he began working for the Swedish Post Office. In 1974 he was appointed the Royal Court Engraver of Sweden. In 1999 he was honoured by his native country with the Commander Order. During his career he engraved stamps for 32 countries and banknotes for 10countries. He died on March 17, 2005 in Krakow, Poland.
