Katanga Wood Carvings Definitives Overprinted "CONGO"
The port town of Albertville on Lake Tanganyika was evacuated by its Katangan administration on November 16, 1961. From December 1961 until March 1962 the Congolese administration used Katangan stamps locally overprinted "CONGO" while waiting for supplies of Congolese stamps to arrive from Leopoldville.
Smaller quantities of Belgian Congo stamps overprinted Katanga were also subsequently overprinted "CONGO" in addition to the stamps pictured above from the Katangan Wood Carvings definitive set.
