200th Anniversary of Manned Flight

200th Anniversary of Manned Flight

Belize was known as British Honduras until 1973 and it became an independent state in 1981. Its colourful stamps such as this issue commemorating the bicentenary of manned flight have considerable appeal to topical stamp collectors.

The six stamps and two souvenir sheets in this set issued on May 16, 1983 depict Lana's design of a flying boat(1670), Barthelemy Lourenco's "flying machine"(1709), Guyton de Morveau's dirigible airship(1784), a modern dirigible, The Clement Bayard(1908), the R-34, Charles Green's Nassau Balloon(1836) and the Montgolfier brothers' balloon(1783) as well as other French balloons from the period.
