Armenia
Handstamped Russian Definitives of 1902-1919
60 kopek surcharge with periods after K and 60
Armenia declared its independence on May 28, 1918 and issued its first stamps in 1919. The first issue was a 60 kopeck surcharge on a orange Russian 1 kopeck definitive. It exists in both perforated and imperforate and with black and violet surcharges. Subsequent issues were overprinted with an Armenian H which is the initial for Hayasdan (Armenia). The
H looks like a script Z with a curved crossbar. Counterfeits are common.
The Armenian H in a frame and without
frame on the 1 ruble design of 1912.
