Iris was the goddess of the rainbow. She was also the messenger who delivered messages from Zeus and Hera to mankind. Farmers paid tribute to her for lifting water from lakes or streams to the clouds so it could fall again to water their crops. Also called Thaumantias, she was the sister of the Harpies.This is Iris as pictured on a 1911 Greek stamp. |
