English Harbour was one of Britain's two permanent naval
stations in the West Indies (Port Royal, Jamaica,
was the other.)This cone of an old volcano
offered excellent protection from storms.

The importance of the sugar and rum industries to imperial trade is evident from the fact that between 1715 and 1717 the Leeward islands exported 403 394 compared with 382 576 for all of the North American colonies.
